Step 3 - Sensemaking

CCA places-01.jpg

The creation of decision trees and other configurations of conditions which lead towards outcomes is done purely based on the numbers in our dataset. Sensemaking is where we take these configurations back to places to ask:

  • - Do these configurations make sense?
  • - Do you see any of these patterns existing in your work in the real-world?
  • - Can you explain why these patterns might exist, and what could facilitate or inhibit them?

This is an essential step of the CCA process as the numbers can only tell us so much. To truly build understanding of what works, in what context, and for whom, we need feedback and discussions from people who are trying to apply this learning in real-time. This feedback is usually gathered through a number of in-person and online sessions, where places are invited to collaboratively interpret the models. This feedback is then used to support, refine, or in some cases completely change our underlying theories of how we can impact society.

In the supporting attachments, you can see a range of presentations which have been used in sensemaking sessions. Furthermore, a series of videos are presented below featuring discussions of the configurations from Places doing this work.
